What I Am Reading
I believe that reading, like travel, is a vital part of our self-education. Eric Hoffer, a longshoreman who educated himself by reading voraciously, wrote my favorite thought on self-education:
“In times of change (and these days certainly qualify!) learners inherit the earth; while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists!”
Each month I will share with you some of my favorite books, or what I am currently reading. Please feel free to comment and add your own favorites.
(Family Karate Moms & Dads: please note that not all of my selections will be appropriate for all ages.)
The last four books I have read, all of which I strongly recommend, are:
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. A true story of courage and survival by our warriors in the Pacific during World War II.
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. A massive novel extolling the power of reason, individuality, inventiveness, and free enterprise.
Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes. Perhaps the best fictional book on the Vietnam War – ever, written over four decades by a combat veteran.
The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Race relations through the eyes of African American maids in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi.
Two of these books have already been made into movies, and the other two soon should be!
